The Luther College women's tennis team dominated the 1999 Iowa Conference Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Oct. 15-16 for the eighteenth year in a row. The Norse captured five singles titles and two doubles titles for 87 points, five points ahead of Cornell.
The team entered the tournament missing three-time defending singles and doubles champion Leah Schmitt who is student-teaching this fall. Head coach Su Oertel has also been gone most of the season caring for her sick mother. Coach Mary Thompson, Executive Director of the Sioux Falls Tennis Association and long-time friend of Oertel, has led the team in their success this fall.
"We are very proud of the way the women performed to win the 1999 championship," stated Oertel and Thompson. "With only two singles players and two doubles teams seeded No. 1 in their flights, the remaining players came through from the No. 2 seeds. This season was also the first time in 18 years that we have competed in the IIAC tournament with more than the same six or seven players playing both singles and doubles."
Maria Miller ('00) at No. 1, Brooke Hagen ('01) at No. 2, Julie Perrault ('00) at No. 3, Heidi Hingeveld ('00) at No. 4, and Ali Hill ('02) at No. 6 won singles titles. This was the first title for Hill, the second for Hingeveld, and the third for both Hagen and Perrault.
League MVP
For the second year in a row Maria Miller was named the league MVP. Miller, seeded second due to an early season loss to Cornell's Lindsey Pfalmer, won all three of her matches without dropping a set. The championship was her fourth singles title and her second at No. 1. She joins only four other Iowa Conference women in winning four singles titles.
